The local recycling center, Peninsula Sanitation, is located South of Sharon Ave. across from Bresnan Communications at 1108 Enterprise Dr., Houghton.  The hours are:  Tuesday 9-3 and Thursday noon-6. 

What can be recycled here? 
 

  • Newspapers:  This means newspapers and the insert ads that come with them ONLY!  Junk mail, office paper and grocery bags are not accepted.  If you bring your newspapers in a bag or container they must be removed at the recycling center.  Telephone books are accepted if the covers are removed.
  • Magazines:  High gloss magazines, catalogs and the covers of telephone books ONLY! Books, mixed paper or semi-glossed paper will not be accepted.
  • Cardboard:  Clean, dry corrugated cardboard ONLY!  Cereal boxes, cigarette cartons, 12-pack cases or any paper type cardboard will not be accepted.  Please flatten the cardboard.
  • Plastic:  Translucent milk jugs with the #2 HDPE recycling symbol ONLY!  Please remove caps and rings, and rinse thoroughly.  No other plastic can be recycled with milk jugs.
  • Metal:  Clean tin cans, metal jar lids and foil products ONLY!  Please rinse all cans and flatten to save space.
  • Glass:  Clear, colorless glass ONLY! No tinted or colored glass.  Most wine bottles are tinted and cannot be recycled here.  Place carefully in labeled cardboard bins.  DO NOT OVERLOAD CONTAINERS.
What else can be recycled in the Keweenaw? 
  • Soda cans:   Plastic bottles and cans with a bottle bill (10-cent deposit) can be taken to Econo Foods, Jim’s Foodmart or Wal-Mart.  Be aware that some stores only take back the products that they sell.

  • Latex Paint:  Pour into newspaper-covered surface or into plastic bag-lined box, or add cat litter or sawdust.  Allow to dry away from children and pets.  Deposit with regular trash, as well as empty can with lids removed.
  • Oil Based Paint:  Good for 10-15 years; give away to neighbors, theater groups, etc.  Save for household hazardous waste collection.  Allow to dry.  Avoid breathing fumes.  For questions about household hazardous waste, call Lucille Scotti, Michigan DEQ @ 1-800-662-9278.
