Department Open House
On September
17th, four SEEn members answered question about SEEn and the department
to prospective students and their families. It looks like we recuited
at least 4 or 5 new environmentals.
Fall Adopt-a-Highway
On September 11th, four brave souls went out to
our strech of highway north of McLain State Park. Notable finds
included a tupperware dish with lid, sock, and a plastic dog head toy.
It was a beautiful late summer day and a good time was had by all.
Fall BBQ
On September 3th we had our Annual Fall BBQ in the
DOW courtyard. This year ASCE and XE joined SEEn making this our
biggest BBQ yet. There was a great turnout of old and new faces,
including a large number of first-year students...who will hopefully
get involved after seeing what we are really about. Hamburgers and
brats were expertly grilled by ASCE..
Events from previous
years
Lake Superior Map
Paint-In
A few SEEn members joined forces during the month
of March to create 9' by 12' canvas maps of Lake Superior for local
elementary schools. Playing with paint and eating free food . . . what
could be more fun than that?
SEEn Christmas Party
Early in December, SEEn hosted its annual
Christmas party at Dr. Paterson's house. We had a great turnout and
spent the night having lots of fun decorating a Christmas tree,
exchanging gifts, and playing games.
Student Presentations
Night
Student presentation night was held after a brief
meeting on October 18th, 2001. Presentations were given on Kohler
corporation, Argonne National Lab, and the Appalachian Trail.
On October 5th, 2000 SEEn hosted the 3rd annual Student Presentations
Night. Free subs and beverages were provided. We listened to
Environmental Engineers while they gave presentations on their summer
experiences and learned where to look for the best jobs for next summer!
Field Trip!
Ten SEEn and MWEA members took a field trip to
Sault Ste. Marie at the end of September 2001. We met a civil engineer
from Michigan Tech at the Soo Locks and got an explanation of how
things worked there. We also got a tour of the LSSU Aquatic Lab. We
spent some time hiking and camping at Tahquamenon Falls on the return
to Houghton.
At the end of September 2000 we went on a field trip to Duluth, MN
along with MWEA. We visited a wastewater treatment plant, an EPA
research lab, viewed the drinking water treatment at a State Park, and
visited the brand new Great Lakes Aquarium. We had a great time and
learned a lot!
On September 22nd (2001), we took a group of SEEn
members out to our Adopt-a-Highway site north of Hancock. It was a
beautiful day to be outside. We picked up a lot of trash and then
headed out for pizza at a restaurant in Hancock.
On September 17th (2000), SEEn took a trip out to their Adopt-a-Highway
site north of Hancock. Our group of 15 people had a great time finding
interesting items on the side of the road. Our best finds this year
were the top half of an action figure, a mustang hood ornament, a
ceramic boot, and a record titled . . . "Shake Ya Ass"!
Afterwards, we went to Mancino's for some really good pizza :)

Fall BBQ
On September 6th, 2001 we had our fall BBQ in the DOW courtyard at
5:00pm. The weather was great and the students interested in joining
had a chance to meet current SEEn members, eat some free food, and find
out about our upcoming events for the fall.
We managed to brave the gale force winds for our
BBQ during the second week of school (2000). A large group of us headed
out to Chutes and Ladders for our first meeting and some really good
food :) Part of my hamburger was stolen by a seagull, but there was
plenty of food to go around. We had a lot of good ideas and lots of
great people and we are looking forward to another fun year!

Earth Week 2000
We decided to be really involved in Earth Week this year . . . things
were kind of thrown together at the last minute, but everything went
smoothly. With the help of some grant money from GM, we passed out
hundreds of earth stress balls and magnets to students that filled out
a recycling survey.
We also hosted a movie night where we showed A Civil Action and gave
away some really good door prizes.

Field Trip
Seven members of SEEn took a field trip in the spring to the
Lienenkeugals brewery in Chippewa Falls, WI. We spent the night at
Dan's cabin and went to the brewery the next day. It was definately a
change from touring wastewater treatment plants, but most of us weren't
old enough to sample the beer :( We also got to see the World's Largest
Musky (a really big fish . . .) and the World's Tallest Indian!
